Child colors & row details

Apply explicit child backgrounds, show counts and keep notes/TODO metadata.

English guideSource: Unity 6000.3.13f1 · Editor only13 October 2026

Child colors are explicit background snapshots for existing children. Counts and notes provide context without adding gameplay components or another text line.

Apply child colors deliberately#

Child-color edits preserve each child's independent text, icon and unrelated styling. They are separate from copying a parent's complete style.

Scope / actionEffect
Row onlyStop further child-color application; previously painted backgrounds remain.
Direct childrenColor immediate children only.
All descendantsColor existing children at every depth beneath the parent.
Child color / StrengthChoose fill and 0–1 opacity; edits repeat the action for the chosen scope.
Clear child colorsRemove backgrounds within the current scope, preserving other styling. Undo restores the action.

For ENVIRONMENT, try All descendants with green and strength 0.18. Existing Shapes, Display panels and deeper Circle/Square/Triangle rows receive the fill; their fonts/icons remain independent.

New or moved objects do not continuously inherit the tint. Reapply to include them. A reusable header can run its stored child-color recipe once, while prefab-source inheritance is a separate mechanism.

Understand object counts#

ControlCounts
Count in Text & rolesImmediate/direct children.
All descendantsAll nested children, excluding the selected root itself.
Active childrenImmediate children with activeInHierarchy true.
Include inactiveInactive objects in direct/descendant totals; active-child total remains active only.

Two direct children with three grandchildren give direct total 2 and descendant total 5. Children under an inactive parent can have activeSelf true while activeInHierarchy is false; the active-child count follows the latter.

Cached count traversal can need an update after large hierarchy changes. Narrow rows may truncate names and indicators.

Tooltips, TODO and notes#

Open Advanced > Tooltip / TODO / Notes. Use Tooltip for a short purpose, Notes for longer project-local text, and TODO for a reminder. Save the scene and version metadata with your team; hover the row to inspect the result.

Long clipped names have tooltip support. These details do not add another row line or a gameplay component. Advanced's Tree lines - global changes the same shared setting as Settings, not a per-row override.
